Here are the highlights from SBT’s blog post:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Although frozen yogurt has a lot less fat than ice cream, those fat-laden toppings can make up the difference.<\/p>\n

\u2022 SBT looks at some of the more well-known ice cream retailers\u2014franchising pioneers\u2014along with some of the newer players on the scene.<\/p>\n

– Burt Baskin and Irv Robbins created an iconic brand by giving customers small pink spoons to sample flavors until they found one they wanted to purchase. Since 1945, Baskin-Robbins <\/b>has served over 1,000 flavors to more than 300 million guests annually at nearly 7,000 locations.<\/span><\/p>\n

– The Dairy Queen<\/b> soft serve formula dates back to 1938, when John Fremont \u201cGrandpa\u201d McCullough and his son Bradley convinced a friend to offer their new product at his Kankakee, Illinois ice cream store. More than 1,600 servings were sold in the first two hours. Today, the DQ is one of the largest fast food franchises in the world, with over 6,000 locations.<\/span><\/p>\n

– Boyhood pals Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield took a $5 correspondence course from Penn State University\u2019s Creamery in 1977. One year later they renovated a Burlington, Vermont gas station and opened Ben & Jerry’s<\/b>. Their first franchise appeared in 1981 and today, over 300 have been opened by socially conscious franchisees active in seeking to make a real difference in their communities.<\/p>\n

– Dippin\u2019 Dots<\/b> is the brainchild of microbiologist Curt Jones, who applied the process of cryogenic encapsulation \u2014 super-cold freezing methods \u2014 to cream. Temperature requirements for storage mean that Jones’ dots can’t be sold in grocery stores, so franchisees use specialized mobile kiosks for sale at venues such as stadiums and arenas, amusement parks, theaters and shopping malls.<\/span><\/p>\n

– The founder of Sub Zero Ice Cream<\/b>, chemist\/engineer Jerry Hancock, makes servings of ice cream in less than 15 seconds by flash freezing fresh cream and ingredients with liquid nitrogen, as seen on ABC’s \u00ab\u00a0Shark Tank.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n

So whether you choose to go old school or new school, it does seem that everyone is, indeed, screaming for ice cream.<\/span><\/p>\n
