News has arrived of the arrest being of one of the world’s most prolific traffickers in stolen financial information.<\/span><\/p>\n

The U.S. Department for Homeland Security has announced that the Secret Service has arrested Roman Valerevich Seleznev. The Russian national known as “Track2” was originally indicted in the Western District of Washington in March, 2011 for allegedly carrying out breaches of point of sale systems across the U.S. between October, 2009 and February, 2011, and setting up a number of carding forums.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is believed by some observers that Seleznev may have been involved in last year’s notorious Target attack, which pilfered information regarding more than 40 million credit cards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“This important arrest sends a clear message: \u00a0despite the increasingly borderless nature of transitional organized crime, the long arm of justice \u2013 and this Department \u2013 will continue to disrupt and dismantle sophisticated criminal organizations,” said secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson, quoted in a TechweekEurope.co.uk blog post.<\/span><\/p>\n

Selezvev is in now custody and faces the following charges:<\/span><\/p>\n

– Five counts of bank fraud<\/span><\/p>\n

– Eight counts of intentionally causing damage to a protected computer<\/p>\n

– Eight counts of obtaining information from a protected computer<\/p>\n

– One count of possession of 15 or more unauthorized access devices<\/p>\n

-Two counts of trafficking unauthorized access devices<\/p>\n

– Five counts of aggravated identity theft<\/p>\n

Also, TechweekEurope.co.uk is reporting that Seleznev has been separately charged in an indictment in the District of Nevada for participating in a \u201cracketeer influenced corrupt organization\u201d (RICO) and conspiracy to engage in a RICO, alongside two counts of possession of 15 or more counterfeit and unauthorized access devices.<\/span><\/p>\n
