In a post at LinkedIn.com, “Use Technology to Shape Your Company’s Future,” technology forecaster and innovation expert Daniel Burrus examines the issues facing business leaders coping with new technologies like app stores and cloud computing.

– The technology employees use at home and increasingly at the office, including mobile apps and social media via smart phones and tablets, Software as a Service (SaaS), Anything as a Service (XaaS), and cloud computing, is here to stay. “In early 2010, there were 150,000 apps just in the Apple store,” Burrus writes. “Now, Apple has over 450,000 apps with billions of downloads and that does not count the hundreds of thousands of other apps you can download from companies like Google.”
Burrus says, “Today’s gigantic technological shift is already taking place, and the last people who should miss it are today’s business leaders.” Companies need to use modern technology to “redefine who they are, what they offer and how they offer it,” he writes. “As a result, by using technology effectively, your company can create new products, new services, and entire new markets — something technology couldn’t readily do in the past.”
– First, Burrus says to look at your products, services and industry, and ask yourself these key questions:
- What is growing and what is shrinking?
- Where is the direction of change based on the impact of new technology?
- Based on where things are going, is there a way to use technology to create new opportunities?
– “Next, look at how technology is affecting your customers in your industry right now,” Burrus writes. “Examine the overall customer experience as well as who is buying your offerings.” Ask yourself:
- Is there a better customer? For example, maybe you’re selling to a customer who is focused on the lowest price.
- Who is your ideal customer?
- Is there a customer you don’t have but should have?
- Could you use technology to redefine your product and attract that customer?
- Is there a way to use technology to enhance your product or service in some way that opens up a market or creates a new market for you?
– “Finally, look at the specific ways in which you compete in the marketplace as well as what makes your company unique,” Burrus writes. “Then decide how technology can redefine the way you compete.” Therefore, ask yourself:
- Is there a way you can use technology to redefine how you compete?
- Is there a way you can use technology to change your product or how you service people?
- Is there a way you can use technology to redefine your customer’s experience?
Burrus warns executives to move quickly. “From mobile finance and banking to geo-social networking tools, every vertical from real estate to manufacturing is going to be redefined in a short period of time.” Redefining your company by improving operations and creating new revenue streams to create higher profits must become a strategic imperative.
