Whether you&#8217;re a first-time franchise hopeful, a small business owner or an established chain, it&#8217;s always smart to stay on top of information technology.<\/p>\n<p>In a post at LinkedIn.com, &#8220;Use Technology to Shape Your Company\u2019s Future,&#8221; technology forecaster and innovation expert Daniel Burrus examines the issues facing business leaders coping with new technologies like app stores and cloud computing.<\/p>\n<p>Here below are some of the salient points of Burrus&#8217; insightful LinkedIn article:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; The technology employees use at home and increasingly at the office, including mobile apps and social media via smart phones and tablets, Software as a Service (SaaS), Anything as a Service (XaaS), and cloud computing, is here to stay. &#8220;In early 2010, there were 150,000 apps just in the Apple store,&#8221; Burrus writes. &#8220;Now, Apple has over 450,000 apps with billions of downloads and that does not count the hundreds of thousands of other apps you can download from companies like Google.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Burrus says, &#8220;Today\u2019s gigantic technological shift is already taking place, and the last people who should miss it are today\u2019s business leaders.&#8221; Companies need to use modern technology to &#8220;redefine who they are, what they offer and how they offer it,&#8221; he writes. &#8220;As a result, by using technology effectively, your company can create new products, new services, and entire new markets \u2014 something technology couldn\u2019t readily do in the past.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; First, Burrus says to look at your products, services and industry, and ask yourself these key questions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>What is growing and what is shrinking?<\/li>\n<li>Where is the direction of change based on the impact of new technology?<\/li>\n<li>Based on where things are going, is there a way to use technology to create new opportunities?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&#8211; &#8220;Next, look at how technology is affecting your customers in your industry right now,&#8221; Burrus writes. &#8220;Examine the overall customer experience as well as who is buying your offerings.&#8221; Ask yourself:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is there a better customer? For example, maybe you\u2019re selling to a customer who is focused on the lowest price.<\/li>\n<li>Who is your ideal customer?<\/li>\n<li>Is there a customer you don\u2019t have but should have?<\/li>\n<li>Could you use technology to redefine your product and attract that \u00a0customer?<\/li>\n<li>Is there a way to use technology to enhance your product or service in \u00a0some way that opens up a market or creates a new market for you?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8211; &#8220;Finally, look at the specific ways in which you compete in the marketplace as well as what makes your company unique,&#8221; Burrus writes. &#8220;Then decide how technology can redefine the way you compete.&#8221; Therefore, ask yourself:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is there a way you can use technology to redefine how you compete?<\/li>\n<li>Is there a way you can use technology to change your product or how you \u00a0service people?<\/li>\n<li>Is there a way you can use technology to redefine your customer\u2019s experience?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Burrus warns executives to move quickly. &#8220;From mobile finance and banking to geo-social networking tools, every vertical from real estate to manufacturing is going to be redefined in a short period of time.&#8221; Redefining your company by improving operations and creating new revenue streams to create higher profits must become a strategic imperative.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s the ideal cutting-edge POS for this new type of environment?
