Franchising Industry Pledge to Hire Veterans, Wounded Warriors and Military Spouses Exceeds Expectations

veteransTwo years ago, as part of the International Franchise Association (IFA) VetFran program’s Operation Enduring Opportunity and the White House Joining Forces Initiative, the IFA and its 600 VetFran member companies committed to recruit and hire 80,000 veterans, wounded warriors and military spouses by 2014.

Their timing couldn’t have been better, given that the current resurgence in franchising coincides with veterans’ and their partners’ interest in pursuing entrepreneurial opportunities, including franchising.

Just as we happily share our vast point of sale (POS) experience and expertise with startup owners in order to help them make the best decisions from the very beginning, we at Sintel Systems are happy to share articles and commentary about the dynamic franchise market.

In a release published on its website, “IFA Reports Over 151,000 Veterans and Military Spouses Have Entered Franchising Since 2011,” IFA President & CEO Steve Caldeira announced that 151,557 veterans and military spouses have entered franchising since 2011 — including 5,192 as franchise business owners.

IFA writes that its “VetFran initiative is also proudly supported by the National Chamber Foundation and Capital One’s Hiring 500,000 Heroes, a campaign to employ half a million veterans and military spouses by the end of 2014.”

Thomas J. Donohue, president and CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, is quoted as saying, “IFA has stood with us from the beginning and set the example for associations and companies across America by making one of the first and largest pledges toward our Hiring 500,000 Heroes campaign.” He added, “The fact that they have gone well above their hiring goal is a testament to their commitment to the men and women who have served our country.”

Energized by this success, the IFA will expand opportunities for veterans by partnering with the Small Business Administration (SBA) to “start, maintain and expand small business opportunities for veterans in franchising.”

In their release, the IFA listed some of the highlights of their Strategic Alliance Memorandum with the SBA:

-IFA’s VetFran will take the lead in coordinating franchising content in Operation Boots to Business, part of the Transition Assistance Program through which all separating service-members process.

-In a first for IFA, all separating service members with an interest in small business and entrepreneurship will hear about the resources VetFran has to offer.

-Going forward, VetFran may nominate veteran franchisees to the SBA’s Veterans Advisory Committee.

-SBA & VetFran will work together in creating educational programs including Small Business Development Centers, SCORE and Women’s Business Centers.
