Poke fad or concept? article @ Sintel Systems A Hawaiian dish known as Poke has quickly become a staple piece of Old Town Pasadena’s diverse food scene. Made of raw seasoned fish over a bed of rice, Poke concepts have been a hot trend.

Old Town Pasadena has two build-your-own poke concepts right in the same vicinity so the LA Times put both to the test.

Spinfish Poke House:

36 W. Colorado Blvd. No. 7

Pasadena, CA

(626) 585-0988

Spinfish serves up classic poke bowls in four easy steps. Patrons first begin by choosing a type of fish including salmon, ahi tuna, or hamachi. Then you can choose to create your own bowl or pick from a selection of signature dishes. After your base is determined, whether you want brown or white rice, noodles and mixed greens. Step four is add-ons, which will run your total up about 1 or 2 dollars.

Limited tables and chairs are scattered inside and outside the restaurant, while a bar lines the window.

Poke Salad Bar:

12 West Colorado Blvd.,

Pasadena, CA

(626) 304-3100.

Ordering at Poke Salad Bar comes in five simple steps. First you begin by choosing a size and base of white rice, brown rice, salad, or roll. Step 2 is picking a fish from a wide selection including: ahi tuna, spicy tuna, yellowtail, scallops, albacore or octopus. Step 3 is selecting your toppings. Step four is picking a sauce. Lastly, customers can choose to add garnish toppings like sesame seeds or green onions. Most toppings come with no extra charge.

Conclusion:

Although Spinfish has a unique set of toppings Poke Salad Bar has a wider range of fish selections. Poke Salad Bar also has spacious seating but if your looking for classic Hawaiian comfort food Spinfish is the place to be. Both restaurants bring unique flavors to the Pasadena dining experience but Poke Salad Bowl wins by a small margin.
