National Donut Day article @ Sintel SystemCelebrating the 78th annual National Doughnut Day, participating independent and large chain donut shops will be offering free sweet treats.

Taken place on the first Friday of  June, National Doughnut Day started in 1938 by the Salvation Army. Initiated during the  Great Depression, the holiday was a way to bring awareness of their social service programs. After 78 years they continue to raise money and assist more than 30 million American families.

During World War 1, approximately 250 Salvation Army volunteers were sent to France to aid in war efforts. Women volunteers would fry donuts in soldier’s helmet then distribute them among the men in trenches. Dubbed “donut lassies,” National Doughnut day honors women volunteers who distributed stamps, supplies and yummy treats during the war.

Five leading doughnut shops offering free donuts are:

Krispy Kreme

Guest will receive one free donut of their choice from any American (excludes Connecticut) or Canadian location. Other countries participating are Australia, Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Philippines, and Turkey.
