Franchise Owners Unite in Seeking Legislative Protections

franchiseFranchise Owners Associations continue to make headway in seeking legislative protections as New Hampshire joins California, Maine, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island (already successfully passed) in introducing bills to protect franchised businesses.

A blog post at BlueMauMau.org, « New Hampshire to Introduce Franchise Protection Bill, » reports that New Hampshire representative Pat Abrami has indicated that he has filed legislation to « provide some balance to the franchisor-franchisee relationship in the Granite State. »

Representative Abrami also said that he has received a letter from the International Franchise Association (IFA) in opposition to the bill, despite the fact that the bill has not yet been made available in print. Nevertheless, the IFA writes that the proposed legislation « will weaken franchisee equity, damage brands, reduce product quality, limit franchisor assistance to franchisees, increase incentives for litigation and jeopardize contract rights. »

« Franchise owners in various states and their leaders have increasingly expressed to this journal that they realize that lobbying to change their situation is a long-term commitment, » writes BlueMauMau.org. « That’s why local franchisees are forming and growing their own state groups, like the recent Maine Franchise Owners Association. »

Keith Miller, a franchise owner of multiple sandwich shops and chairman of D.C.-based Coalition of Franchisee Associations (CFA), is quoted in the blog post, « The formation of a state franchisee association is a model that allows franchise owners, who may not have the opportunity to join a brand association, the opportunity to gain the knowledge and benefits of a larger franchisee association. It also allows its members to focus on local and state issues that impact franchisees and small-business owners. We look forward to the Maine Franchise Owners Association being a valuable asset to the CFA. »
