In 1984, commercial airline pilot, Walt Darren, had the idea of organizing a balloon festival. Joined by Evelyn Hacker, who suggested incorporating Temecula Valley’s natural attractions, came the popular festival.
Sponsored by the community and other contributions until 1991 when the nonprofit organization, Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival Association, was created for the enrichment and economic growth of the community.
Including what formerly was six wineries, culinary minds, and attractions the first festival drew in more than 4,000 people.
Now over thirty wineries inhabit the county. Many of which participate in the festivities every year.
Continued growth led to bigger locations and better attractions. By 1991 notable musicians like the Beach Boys had become part of the whole experience.
Hot air balloons and wine tasting continue to be the of appeal. Current years have included exclusive experiences. Special tickets offer food and wine or food and beer events.
Food and Wine events are three to four course meals each prepared by a different chef with a wine pairing.
Food and Beer courses are prepared with beer selections from the valley with a sample of the beer used in the recipe to wash the course down.
Hot air balloon rides are also available for guest who buy tickets in advance.
