Entrepreneur has released their 2013 report on the fastest-growing franchises in North America, with Subway scoring at number one.
Not surprisingly, numerous other Quick Service Restaurants (QSR) dominate the list (25 out of 106 listings). Notably, Chester’s chicken, Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwich Shops and Dunkin’ Donuts made the top ten, while frozen yogurt continues it meteoric rise with Menchie’s (no. 17), Orange Leaf (no. 20), and Red Mango (no. 38) the fastest-spreading. In a similar icy vein, Kona Ice shaved ice trucks rolled in at no. 27.
Other top-scoring taste-makers include Firehouse Subs (no. 21), Papa John’s Int’l Inc. (no. 23), Wingstop Restaurants (chicken wings, no. 32), Jersey Mike’s Subs (no. 33) and Denny’s Inc. (no. 37).
Entrepreneur ranked the companies based on growth in the number of open and operating U.S. and Canadian units from July 31, 2011-July 31, 2012. During that year, the 106 companies racked up “an impressive 9,945 new North American franchise units.”
