As Second Career Franchisers, Baby Boomers Are in the Zone

dv342132Considering a mid-life career change instead of retirement? Consider franchising, a decision numerous baby boomers have made, which is fueling a franchise boom.

Boomer demographics continue to influence the workplace and small business investment. Take as an example a recent blog post at WirelessZONE on baby boomers choosing the “new retirement.”

WirelessZONE has seen an unabated trend in baby boomers taking on franchise business ownership after concluding successful careers in the corporate world. “Now, more than ever, people in this age range are transferring valuable acquired skills to their own franchise businesses, successfully and with no regrets,” the post said.

As the only full-service POS provider, from software development to our unparalleled ongoing support, we at Sintel Systems see a lot of boomers looking to make a mid-life career switch. While the WirelessZONE post focuses on cellular phone retail, the numbers rings just as true for those seeking to enter, say, the frozen yogurt, pizza or sushi sectors.

WirelessZONE points to a 2009 Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation report that “from 1996 to 2007, Americans between the ages of 55 and 64 had a higher rate of entrepreneurial activity than those aged 20 to 34.”

The 80 million baby boomers, generally defined as people born between 1946 and 1964, are the largest demographic group. Layoffs, voluntary retirement and mortality means that, over time, baby boomers will exit the workforce. Still, many cannot or do not want to retire. Many consider a fresh start and pursue a lifelong dream to purchase a business.

In the WirelessZONE post, Clay Neff, Executive Director of Franchise Development for Wireless Zone, said, “Boomers often bring years of management experience to the table which provides an advantage when moving from employee to employer. After all, there’s no time to waste when the trial-and-error days of youth are behind you.”

“Baby boomers make excellent [cellular] franchise candidates because they are mature, have successfully been a team member sometime in their career, and are more resilient to the ups and downs of a new business,” said Neff. He concluded, “In general, this age group is also more financially secure and capable of investing in a franchise.”
